This is the poem that Susan, aka IceQueen, wrote during my geography class many, many years ago.T'was Geography period
And all through the class
Not a creature was stirring
We were sleeping en masse.
The video movie was certainly bland
With an African fellow we couldn't understand!
His accent was thick as the new fallen snow
And what he was saying I really don't know!
Mr. Lamb was enthralled by the horrible thing
While Dave used his compass to play with his ring.
Olof was drawing, Caron was snoring
It's hard to believe it was really that boring!
He gave us some questions, we wanted to hide.
We would even have rather been watching his slides!
But through maps and through movies
We really must say
That of all of our teachers
'Doug's' really OK!

The gypsie phenomena-grandma, mom and baby
In Barcelona the tour guide warned us that they have the best pickpockets in the world, and that we shouldn't make life easy for them by carring wallets in hip pockets, or putting purses down to take pictures. Every time that she (our guide) saw a gypsie Grandma, mom and baby, she would shout out "Watch your purses!". Appartently the trio distract the tourists while the male member of the clan zips by on a bicycle and grabs a purse. In the narrow streets of European cities you obviously have to be vigilant. Dianne wondered why the females dressed in such a way that they were easily identifiable as gypsies, but this is important to attract people's attention. What a way to make a living!

2 cruises in 6 months helped us to refine our cruise check list. Once you embark on a cruise it is sometimes difficult to acquire small things that you might forget. Here is our current check list.-tickets - air and cruise
-passports
-monely- $US are good everywhere, but it is often cheaper to get the local currency before you leave
-photocopies of passport pages, photo id, credit cards to leave with a relative ( made multiple copies and forgot to leave them with anyone last trip
-cameras ( video and tapes, digital and memory card, rechargable batteries and charger-the ship we were on had 110 v.)
-clothes- formal, informal, casual, semiformal, warm, cool - you need a wardrobe
-shoes and sock -dress, casual, walking, walking! in Europe. Shoes that don't give you blisters
-mole skin for Di's blisters
-toilettries
-sunscreen
-rain gear
-good book to read on the plane and on days at sea
-a sense of humour, a sense of adventure, and a willingness to try just about anything ( and patience for the airports)
- don,t forget addresses, phone numbers and e-mail addresses of important people ( we did on our last cruise )
Pre- trip
baby sitters for dog, for cat, for house

Our cruise ship, the Carousel, docked in the harbour at Nice
Just watched part of a program on cruising in the Caribbean. Wow! Was it ever different from the cruise ships that we have been on. Our 2 cruises this year have been on very small cruise ships, the Sundream and the Carousel. These ships were operated by a cruise line called MY, out of the UK. Most of the passengers were older ie mid 30's on up. They were definitely not in the party mod the way the younger clientel of the big cruise ships appeared to be- very interesting but not wild. Our cruises were intimate and friendly. It was easy to get to meet people and to strike up acquaintances. Everyone was seated for dinner although you could find food elsewhere. The were no climbing rocks, tennis courts, wave pools, multilple restaurants and bars etc. There was one pool, a library, three major entertainment locations plus a casino that had very few customers. While I am a slot machine devotee in Vegas, I was not even mildly attracted to them on either cruise. There were many interessting sites to see, people to meet and tours to go on.

I,m new around here. I,m am retired and my wife and I like to travel. In self defense I am starting a blog as everyone else in the family seems to be doing this. I have travelled from coast to coast in Canada, and extensively in the US. I have been to Mexico( Cosumel) , to Jamaica, to Caymena Islands, to Cuba 2x , and to Costa Rica. We have recenly returned from a Mediterranean Cruise that had stops in Tunis and Carthage, Rome, Florence, Nice, Barfcelona and Palma. We live in Australia for almost two years in the early 1970's. Our next goal is to spend some tilme in Paris.
