Shipping News — Deals from cruise industry
Jul. 23, 2005. 01:00 AM
In 1965, a little company chartered the 6,000-tonne Princess Patricia ferry from CP Rail and launched winter cruises from Los Angeles to Mexico's Pacific coast. It took its name from the ship and became Princess Cruises. Later, a couple of its ships — Pacific Princess and Island Princess — starred in the television series The Love Boat (1977—'86), which popularized cruising for a new generation who came to realize sea vacations didn't have to be stuffy and formal. And the rest is history. To mark the 40th anniversary, the company is giving away 40 free cruises. Theme of the promotion is: Do you know someone who really deserves a break? ``In the form of an essay, tell us their story,'' the company urges. ``Why do they deserve to `escape'?'' Deadline for nominations is Aug. 31. Information: www.princess.com/escape [Full Story]

Which way is up? The Big Gull Lake has never been so still, so warm, so hot and humid.

Cottage life by candle light. When you are a cottager you are at the bottom of the Hydro 1 food chain. If there is lightening anywhere within 500km the power goes out. You would think you were in Cuba.

A long, cold winter and high water levels in the lake result in the inevitable dock damage that must be dealt with each year.

But there are few places as peaceful and picturesque as the "cottage" on the sunny summer day.

A few minutes after 11 a.m. yesterday, veteran Toronto sailors Paul Howard and Fiona McCall sailed the Carpe Diem into York Quay and set foot on dry land, bringing to an end their four-year, 40,000-kilometre odyssey around two Cape Horns — one in Iceland, the other in Chile. Sikander Z. Hashmi reports. [Full Story]

ON A BUDGET
He who books late gets the cheap cruise

With cabins empty, summer sailings to the Caribbean and Europe can be had for less

While many overseas visitors may be thinking of Canada as a destination for wilderness adventure, Canada also offers opportunities for urban-focused tourism.

Our three biggest cities offer lots to do and see: Montreal , Toronto , Vancouver . Each of these cities probably has more than enough to keep a first-time visitor busy for a week or two.

But European visitors be aware that, while these cities have public transit systems , they are not as extensive as found in most cities in Europe of comparable size. We are still very much in love with our automobiles, so you might want to consider renting a car. It is cheaper than in Europe.

I can't believe the Olympic Selection Committee did not choose Paris for the 2012 Olympics. Paris was the pre-selection favourite, but one can only imagine the wheeling and dealing that went on for London to get the Games. Paris has such great facilities, friendly people, and lowers costs than London. I think the International Olympic Committee made another of their infamous "mistakes".

If you have ever had the experience of trying to walk, barefoot, on black sand, in the Tropics at mid-day you would know why some people discriminate. Black Sand is Hot! It gets much hotter than white sand. It burns the feet of the unsuspecting, as I found out through personal mis-adventure.

New Kid on the block- Justin Tyler- weighed in at 9 lbs., 6 oz. on June 30, 2005. He has lots of hair. It has a reddish tinge, but not as red as my Canada Day shirt. Grandpa x4.
We expected him to arrive when were returned from Paris but he kept us waiting for another week - I guess he thought it was to hot so he would wait until it cooled down a bit.
